Quarantine, social distancing, fear of the unknown... As many of us navigate these things for the first time, and their impact on our mental health, those living with cancer understand them all too well. The pandemic has only compounded the feelings isolation and stress for our immuno-compromised members and their families. This is why Gilda’s Club Westchester matters.
On March 16, when we closed our clubhouse to in-person programming for the safety of the community, we knew we had to continue providing the critical FREE support that our members needed more now than ever. With zero gaps in service, we shifted to 100% virtual programming and saw a 40% increase in participation.
Over the past eight months, the cancer community has grappled with extraordinary challenges as a result of the pandemic. Our members have been isolated from their families, many of them enduring months of treatments alone to protect themselves from COVID-19. Caregivers have dealt with the unprecedented pressures of managing homeschooling, staying employed, and protecting their loved ones from the virus. And all of those who experienced losses during this time have been grieving alone, many of them without the opportunity to even hold a memorial.
“Three and a half months into chemo... I have been to every treatment alone.”
The call for help was loud and we answered by providing over 1,000 support, healthy lifestyle, and educational sessions remotely since March! Our rapid and comprehensive response to the pandemic did not come without financial investment - in technology, in adding programs, in making it possible for our staff to do their jobs effectively from their own homes and more. Simultaneously, we had to cancel two of our largest and most important fundraisers. In the uncertain months ahead, we anticipate an increase in referrals as the medical community works through a backlog of cancer diagnoses, resulting in even more demand for our services, and yet the pandemic continues to threaten Gilda’s Club’s survival. Our dedicated team stands ready to meet this challenge - but we cannot do it without your support!
“Gilda’s has not just been helpful through the pandemic… it has saved my life.”
We have never faced a crisis of this magnitude and scale, and now, more than ever, we need your help! It has been individuals like you who have believed in and sustained our mission for nearly 20 years. Today, we humbly ask you to make a contribution to keep us going. We are so grateful for everything you have done for Gilda’s, and everything you choose to do today to make a difference. Your gift to will help ensure that no one in our community has to face cancer alone. With appreciation,
