Bilingual Social Worker

The mission of Gilda’s Club Westchester (GCW) is to create welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, children and teens – along with their families and friends.  Gilda’s Club Westchester offers individual and family counseling, special time-limited support programs, lectures and workshops, and social events.  Our innovative programs are an essential complement to medical care.

The Bilingual Social Worker is a team player who values our overall mission and contributes to that mission through their clinical skills. Reporting to the Director of Outreach and Clinical Partnerships, the Bilingual Social Worker will interface with Gilda’s Club participants, staff, volunteers and the professional community.  This individual assists in facilitating key components of the GCW program, including meeting one-on-one with individuals new to Gilda’s Club and facilitating support groups, workshops or other time-limited programs for English and Spanish speaking individuals. The Bilingual Social Worker will initiate outreach efforts to Spanish-speaking communities by introducing GCW programs to community organizations, hospitals, oncology practices, and cancer-related organizations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide services in full compliance with GCW policies and procedures, using clinical oncology skills.
  • Facilitate new member meetings for participants new to Gilda’s Club.
  • Meet one-on-one for initial meetings with English- and Spanish-speaking participants new to Gilda’s Club. This includes individuals with cancer, caregivers, and those who are bereaved. Conduct a clinical assessment (which includes a distress screening), and develop a plan of supportive care.
  • Offer short-term counseling sessions for adults, couples and families.
  • Facilitate at least one support group in Spanish for individuals with cancer, caregivers, or those who are bereaved.
  • Facilitate at least one support group in English for individuals with cancer, caregivers, or those who are bereaved.
  • Plan and oversee social events in both English and Spanish.
  • Facilitate workshops or other time-limited programs in both English and Spanish.
  • Attend program related meetings and work collaboratively with other clinicians on family cases.
  • Participate in community outreach efforts and events, including representing Gilda’s Club at health fairs and other community gatherings. Build relationships with new referral sources, including hospitals, oncology practices, cancer-related organizations, and community organizations.
  • Facilitate at least one support group in Spanish for individuals with cancer, caregivers, or those who are bereaved.
  • Facilitate workshops or other time-limited programs in Spanish.
  • Participate in community outreach efforts and events, including representing Gilda’s Club at health fairs and other community gatherings. Build relationships with new referral sources, including hospitals, oncology practices, cancer-related organizations, and community organizations.
  • The Bilingual Social Worker will report to the Director of Outreach and Clinical Partnerships.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Social Work, or a related field, from an accredited institution and current licensure or certification required by NY state for the specific field (LMSW or LCSW).
  • At least 2 years of oncology social work experience in a hospital or community-based setting.
  • Experience providing individual and group support for those diagnosed, their families, and the bereaved.
  • Complete fluency in Spanish.
  • Understanding of the cancer experience — for those diagnosed, their families and the bereaved.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing.
  • Bereavement experience is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with leadership, staff members, volunteers and community partners.
  • Comfortable with videoconferencing platforms such as Zoom and have ability to provide supportive services remotely.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and data entry.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and commitment to the GCW mission, core values and program.

This position is full-time, requires one to two evenings per week and occassional weekends. Hours will be adjusted to accomodate evenings/weekends.

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

This position is mainly in our Clubhouse in White Plains, NY with some remote work from home available.

Physical Demands:  Light physical effort that includes the ability to lift and carry up to 10 lbs. and climb stairs to attic where some supplies and materials are stored.  A good amount of time is spent sitting at a computer workstation, typing and using a computer mouse.

Emotional Demands:  Working with cancer patients can be emotionally challenging.

Working Conditions:  Confidentiality about members is required.  Must have own transportation. Travel within Westchester, Rockland and Fairfield counties is required for this position. Compensation for mileage will be provided based on the current IRS mileage rates.

 

Oncology Social Work Position – Part time with Evenings

GCW offers supportive, social, and educational programs, healthy lifestyles classes and resource and referrals. Our innovative programs are an essential complement to medical care.

At GCW, we believe in a community that is made up of a diverse mix of talented and mission driven people who want to make a difference in the cancer community. We are fully focused on equality and inclusion and believe in diversity of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin. The part-time Oncology Social Worker (OSW) is a team player who values our overall mission and contributes to that mission through their clinical skills. The OSW will interface with Gilda’s Club participants, staff, volunteers, and the professional community. The OSW assists in facilitating key components of the GCW program including facilitating new member meetings, meeting one-on-one with individuals for short-term counseling, facilitate support groups, and educational workshops. Utilizing his/her clinical oncology skills, the OSW will provide a quality program in full compliance with GCW policies and procedures. The OSW will report to the Program Director.

17 hours per week with at least one evening is required. Position is in-person in White Plains, but some remote work is possible.

Clinical hours towards LCSW available after 90-day probationary period.
Responsibilities

• Assist with requests for membership information, facilitate New Member Meetings and facilitate Customized Membership Plans (intakes), along with all associated follow up and complete documentation in database.

• Manage a case load of short-term counseling, schedule sessions, and complete documentation in database.

• Facilitate at least one ongoing weekly support group complete documentation in database.

• Facilitate time-limited series/groups, assist with any preparation and recruitment as needed, and complete documentation in database.

• Conduct clinical assessments and complete documentation in database.

• Facilitate educational workshops and assist with any preparation and recruitment as needed.

• Assist with community and partnership referrals and associated documentation.

• Attend relevant meetings as schedule permits (e.g., staff, program, program task force, cancer coalition).

• Participate and engage in clinical supervision.

• Support program development by collaborating as part of a team to provide input on and potentially implement pilot programs.

• Act as a substitute support group facilitator as needed.

• Participate in and assist with fundraising events, when schedule permits.

• Close the clubhouse at 7:45pm on scheduled days.

Requirements
• Master’s degree in Social Work, or a related field, from an accredited institution and current licensure or certification required by New York state for the specific field. LCSW preferred.

• Oncology social work experience in a hospital or community-based setting, including experience providing individual, couple and family support. New graduate with relevant experience will be considered.

• Understanding of the cancer experience — for those diagnosed, their families and the bereaved. Oncology and bereavement experience highly desired.

• Experience facilitating support groups and providing individual counseling.

• Intermediate computer skills and ability to learn and utilize our database. • Demonstrates sensitivity and commitment to the GCW mission, core values and program.

• At least one evening per week (until 7:45pm). • Bilingual English/Spanish is an asset.

$35-$45 per hour, commensurate with experience.
