Practicing Gratitude This Holiday Season

The holidays are a time to focus on things that matter the most in your life. A time to disconnect from busy schedules and surround yourself with family and loved ones. Without even realizing it, feelings of gratitude are often woven into annual holiday traditions and can impact one’s mental health in a positive way. Research shows that practicing gratitude helps one appreciate life, improves health, reduces stress, builds strong relationships, helps to handle adversity, and improves sleep quality.

The following are 4 ways to practice gratitude this holiday season:

  1. Keep a gratitude journal — Spend a few minutes each day to write down what you are thankful for. Start small by writing down a few things and then you can gradually expand your list as time goes on.
  2. Practice mindfulness — Meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. Dedicating time for yourself to simply sit in silence and focus on what you’re grateful for each day has many benefits. Meditating helps you to reestablish priorities and reminds you of all there is in your life to be thankful for.
  3. Show gratitude towards loved ones — Whether it’s giving someone a hug, offering to help with chores, bringing a loved one a cup of coffee, or simply writing a thank you note to someone who has cared for you through cancer, the ways to show appreciation are endless.
  4. Thank your body — Your body has endured a lot through treatment and deserves some appreciation. Whether it’s coping with side effects or experiencing fatigue, your body deserves a little extra love!

Gilda’s Club Westchester offers a Living with Cancer support group where members can join in a warm and welcoming space for support and connection throughout their cancer experience. Research suggests that support groups can help to reduce the three most significant stressors associated with cancer: unwanted isolation, loss of control, and loss of hope.
