Reducing Caregiver Stress During the Holidays

Caring for a loved one is a year-round job with no “time off” for holidays, which can be a particularly stressful time with all the added demands.

Here are 4 tips that will make for a less stressful holiday season for caregivers: 

  1. Set realistic expectations The holidays aren’t about fancy decorations or decadent meals. They’re about surrounding yourself with loved ones. This year, remind yourself that it’s okay if your house has fewer decorations. A simpler meal would be just as enjoyable. Don’t pressure yourself to fit the holiday stereotypes. You are doing the best you can!
  2. Accept help from others — You don’t need to tackle the to-do list alone. If someone offers to help – accept their offer and give them a task to lessen your load.
  3. Take some “me time” Take 10 minutes every day to sit and just feel the peaceful quiet. Go outside and clear your head. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the holiday craziness but it’s important to take a step back and remember what the holidays are all about.
  4. Seek support Support groups allow you to talk to others who are experiencing similar situations. Other caregivers may feel many of the same emotions you are. Connecting with them and sharing your feelings can help.
