Five truly amazing years! On Monday, June 2nd more than 200 people from all over Westchester participated in the Fifth Annual Gilda’s Club Westchester Mah Jongg Invitational at Willow Ridge Country Club in Harrison, New York. Whether they came to play, learn, have lunch, or shop at our Mah Jongg boutique, everyone enjoyed an afternoon of fun and camaraderie in support of our mission to provide free emotional and social support to anyone touched by any type of cancer in our community. This year’s event was a huge success, raising nearly $70,000 for Gilda’s Club Westchester.
Co-Chairs Wendy Kleinman and Jodi Shapiro created this event to honor their mothers, Sandi Schneider and Joan Blieberg, both of whom passed away from cancer and shared a love for the game of Mah Jongg. Wendy and Jodi spoke at the Invitational and were amazed at how this event continues to grow — drawing new attendees each year.
Gilda’s Club member Thais Bertozzi shared her personal story of how she too lost her mother to cancer and was diagnosed herself six years later. She conveyed how deeply she appreciated the free support she received from GCW. Since Thais’s surgery and Radiation in November 2013, she has been cancer free and feeling great! Her experiences during treatment have given her a new passion for life. She is now working towards being a personal chef for families. Cancer was all she ever thought about… but not anymore!
